The Three Essential Exercises Your Horse Should Be Doing to Achieve Peak Performance


As a Certified Equine Massage Therapist and OTTB enthusiast, I pursued becoming a CEMT to understand equine anatomy and physiology on a professional level. My intention is to continue the studies of equine biomechanics on a deeper level to better serve our equine partners by implementing training techniques and therapies that further improve the development of a healthy, sound, strong and happy horse.

Our equine friends are amazing athletes, they give us everything and in return, it's our responsibility to “listen to the horse” for any sign of pain or discomfort and help alleviate the underlying systemic issue(s) without causing more problems. 

Many horses have issues with balance, straightness, and range of motion, especially off-the-track-thoroughbreds. Some behavioral issues are a direct manifestation of underlying and sometimes unaddressed physical pain. These physical issues won't resolve on their own, we can help them alleviate pain or discomfort caused by muscle soreness and prevent injuries caused by inflexibility or repetitive motion by training, treating and developing their weak or sore points.

In Three Essential Exercises, we cover:  Rounding (Chin to Chest + Chin between Knees) and Lateral Bending (Chin to Girth + Flank). 

The rounding exercises develop core muscles and peripheral joints in the cervical vertebrae which stimulates the flexion of upper, mid and lower neck.

The lateral exercises develop core muscles and peripheral joints in the cervical vertebrae which stimulates cervical vertebrae and muscles of the entire neck.

Practicing core exercises and adding massage with regularity will help your horse improve flexibility, symmetry, balance, collection, and range of motion. 

This is not a “quick fix” by any means. It’s a better way of working with your horse on a deep physical level using holistic techniques to develop those otherwise difficult to reach core muscles. It takes commitment and persistence, but it's not time-consuming. Do you have an extra 5 minutes before you lunge or tack up? That's all you need.  Your horse will experience results over time if you are consistent in doing the exercises and treating them with massage therapy is very useful to further development and injury prevention.
